The People's Republic of China celebrated the 62nd anniversary of its founding on Saturday with a colourful ceremony at Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Chinese leaders laid floral tributes at the Monument to the People's Heroes in the centre of Beijing, built in honour of people who died during China's bloody civil war in 1949. The war resulted in the Communist Party coming to power and the Nationalist Party fleeing to Taiwan to set up their government there. Chinese leaders as well as hundreds of citizens walked around the Martyrs' Monument, viewing the relief sculptures depicting scenes of the history of China. Thousands of people from across the country gathered earlier on Saturday at Tiananmen Square to watch a flag raising ceremony marking their October 1 National Day. By five o'clock in the morning, before sunrise, a 100-thousand had already gathered to watch the event. Many had come from distant provinces such as central China's Hunan and Anhui, and north China's Hebei. Some had even come to the square on Friday night to ensure themselves prime spots from which to view the ceremony.
